動かない、または進展しない状態が続くことを表す。「traffic stands still」のように物理的な静止でも、「discussion stands still」などで進行が止まっている様子にも使える。口語でも書き言葉でも使える定型。

語源
stand still は stand「立つ・止まる」（古英語 standan）と still「静かな・動かない」（古英語 stille）の組み合わせです。直訳どおり「じっと立つ」から「止まる」へ意味が固まりました。関連語は stand, withstand。
